Welcome to Emojicon, a boundary-pushing celebration of all things emoji. The conference is the brain child of Emojination, an organization of emoji-lovers who hope to raise awareness about emoji's many possibilities. Our motto is, "Emoji by the People, for the People."
With activities ranging from emoji improv to an emoji film festival, Emojicon is equal parts hackathon, political activism, and whimsical hilarity. More than a thousand emoji enthusiasts attended Emojicon 2016 in San Francisco, and the event received extensive coverage from notable press outlets like Time, CNN, The New York Times, SF Chronicle, the LA Times, Mashable, and Digiday, to name a few. Artists, designers, computer scientists, and some of the greatest thinkers in the online communication space came together for collaboration, inspiration, thoughtful dialogue, and, of course, emoji-themed food.
Even though emoji is a form of communication that touches literally millions of internet users worldwide, the emoji review process is controlled by an entitity called the Unicode Consortium, which is dominated by a handful of American tech corporations. We want to open the conversation up to everybody. Together we can turn emoji into a more diverse, more representative, and more vibrant visual language.
Emojination has led the charge in making the dumpling emoji and the hijab emoji a reality. We also created the emoji proposals for the pretzel, baseball cap, broccoli, and fortune cookie emoji, among others. Emojicon is yet another step toward emoji inclusiveness.

Throughout the conference, hackathon participants designed and tinkered with emoji technology. On the final day of Emojicon, they presented their brilliant creations on the Emojicon Main Stage. One group of hackathoners invented Emoji Salad, an SMS-based emoji pictionary game. And leave it to a group of scientists to create petri dish, fire extinguisher, and safety goggles emoji.
